In this thesis, we focus on the effect on device performance by varying positions of nitrogen in carboline compounds—the host materials for blue phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes. The triplet energy level of carboline compounds is higher than carbazole in common use, meaning that different positions of nitrogen can lead to different resonance structures. Ergo, the steric effect would change crystal packing, which, consequently, leads to different electronic behaviours. Focusing on the electrochemical and photochemical properties of the compounds, we characterise the compounds into high triplet energy host materials in PhOLED.
The device with the host of compound 9 and the guest of FIrpic exhibited the turn on voltage at 20.6 mA/cm2 of 10.10 V, luminance of 4644 cd/m2, max. current efficiency of 49.31 cd/A at 4.5 V, power efficiency of 37.55 lm/W at 4 V and the external quantum efficiency of 22.03 %.
