摘要: | The construction industry has been historically slow at adopting new technology and is seen by many to be one of the reasons for the sector’s poor productivity. The objective of this research was to explore an emerging technology, Blockchain, and its potential in the construction industry by targeting a widely used document, the Bill of Quantities. Construction contracts often run for long periods of time, and the real price may differ to the price set at the beginning due to unforeseen circumstances. These price fluctuations are unavoidable, therefore a price escalation clause is often included in contracts. However, this adds another paperwork process on top of the mountain of tedious paperwork in construction contracts. This is where blockchain can be used to not only digitize the bill of quantity in a trusted manner, but also through the use of smart contracts, automate tasks, such as dynamic price adjustments of individual bill items as the project moves forward. In this thesis, a bill of quantity framework based on blockchain was created, and as a proof of concept, an oracle that can provide external data to the on-chain bill of quantity was successfully developed. Although blockchain technology is still at an early stage of development and widespread adoption is still far fetched, this research has shown a potential use-case in hopes of laying out a foundation for future blockchain applications. |
