摘要: | Alternative energy has attracted tremendous attention due to the depletion of major fossil fuels. Because oil prices are high, and environmental concerns about global warming and pollution are multiplying, nations that desire to be energy independent has started to develop the solar power industry(PV industry). Strong industry growth is driven by the worldwide government subsidies now and experts expect that the solar power industry will experience very strong volume growth over the next few years. Motech and E-Ton in Taiwan have grown exponentially during these years so the Taiwan solar power industry has become attractive.
This research analyzes the global PV industry including the description of the PV market structure and the business landscape, and the expectation of the market in the future. This research concludes that both “technology” and “costs” are critical to the development of the PV industry. In addition, with the polysilicon shortage and resulting higher the material costs account an increasingly share in solar cell manufacturing costs, “material” availability has become a key survivor factor. In short, both “technology improvement” and “costs reduction” are both still the key success factors. On the other hand, this research also focuses on the development of Taiwan PV industry. According to the analysis of the diamond model, we discuss that the competitive advantages of the PV industry in Japan and Germany. Comparing these two successful nations with Taiwan, this research identifies the main problems and barriers of the Taiwan PV industry. In addition, this research also analyzes the position and strategies of Motech and E-Ton, two major and profitable companies in Taiwan of the PV industry. Finally, this research suggests that:(1) The government in Taiwan should accelerate the collaboration between the companies and the other research departments in addition to aggressive investments in technology R&D and incentive programs. (2) PV firms in Taiwan can follow the example of the semiconductor industry in Taiwan to control and manage the upstream and downstream operations in an orderly manner, and they should focus on the technology innovation to improve the quality and lower the costs. In addition, they can find the niche market to enter. |
