A Study on Education and Training of Leisure Agriculture of Agricultural Extension Advisor

Leisure agriculture is an emerging leisure industry , which simultaneously serves the purpose of production and service. The government has listed it as one of the country important agricultural policies and makes every endeavor to carry out this policy through the agricultural extension system. Therefore, the agricultural extension advisors are those who stand in the front line to carry out the mission. The agricultural extension advisor serves the roles as an consultant, an educator, and marketing manger at the same time. The major concerns of the present study are (1) what specialized knowledge and competence of leisure agriculture the agriculture extension education has endowed the agricultural advisors with and (2) how the professional training of leisure agriculture was designed. With literature analyses and in-depth interviews, the present study investigated and related the situation and problems of leisure agriculture that faced the agricultural extension advisors from the perspective of education and training planning and curriculum design.
This research found that the professional education of leisure agriculture on the agricultural extension advisors is not an integrated, connected and systematic one, which lacks a standard and guideline to implement the curricula. The finding shows that a system of education and training is not yet established. The curriculum design can be summarized as two kinds: one is the comprehensive curriculum, and the other is the subject type curriculum. The subject type curriculum is superior in cultivating the specialized ability of leisure agriculture for the agricultural extension advisor. The curriculum program designed by the training institution can be categorized into two kinds: one is self-determined and the other is dependent. The curriculum of these training institution are mainly from the curriculum offered by other training institution, imposed by the supervising authority, designed by the training staff of the institution or by the institution per se, provided by the lecturers, and demanded by the market, etc.. In short, the training for the agricultural extension advisors to foster their consulting ability on leisure agriculture is hard to fulfill its purpose.
