| zh_TW |
dc.description.abstract | Abstract
Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS, xerophthalmia) can be defined as a progressive inflammatory condition of the cornea and conjunctiva caused by lack of tears and deficiency of the precorneal tear film is commonly encountered in small animal practice. The topical cyclosporin is thought to be a gold standard treatment of KCS through both lacrimomimetic and anti-inflammatory effect. The aim of this study was to investigate the tear production in dogs with KCS, normal lacrimal function and efficacy of cyclosporin treatment in Taiwan. Data were obtained from the database of the Ophthalmology Section of the National Taiwan University Veterinary Hospital. Totally 344 dogs (26 breeds) were included in the study. In the group of dogs with normal lacrimal function (n=119), the value of Schirmer tear test (STT) was ranged from 15mm/min to 28mm/min and the mean STT1 value decreased with age. There was no significant difference in STT1 value in the aspects of patient’s weight, gender and side of eyes. In dogs with KCS (STT<15mm/min, n=201), there were represented in 22 breeds and American cocker spaniel, Shih-tzu and Maltese were the leading affected breeds. Mixed breed, Chihuahua and Shih-tzu showed significant variations in the onset age of KCS. There was a significantly higher incidence of ulcerative keratitis in KCS affected Shih-tzu and Maltese. 70% of KCS dogs treated with topical 1% cyclosporine solution showed a good response to the treatment. | en |
