To investigate the incidence and risk factors of excess salivation in post-anaesthetized dogs undergoing various surgical procedures. Five hundred and forty-eight client-owned dogs admitted to the National Taiwan University Veterinary Hospital requiring general anesthesia for a variety of surgical or diagnostic procedures were included in this study. The premedication and analgesia protocols were designed by individual anaesthetists according to the physical status and the nature of procedures. All dogs were induced with propofol and maintained with isoflurane in oxygen or with propofol in total intravenous anesthesia. Excess salivation status were recorded during recovery. Univariate analyses were conducted to observe the potential risk factors of drooling/hypersalivation. The overall incidence of excess salivation was 23.5%. Premedication agents and using of analgesia showed significant effect (p<0.05) on excess salivation. Females with laparotomy had potential effect on excess salivation. Ages, body weights, breeds, propofol dosages, maintained agents , anesthesia time, and analgesia agents had no impact on excess salivation. The general recovery qualities were good despite of excess salivation. These results indicate the excess salivation in dogs after general anesthesia are not associated with pain and the potential risk factors are variable. |
