| dc.description.abstract | The rising costs in medical expenditure require medical divisions to be managed more effectively. Taiwanese medical system provides universal coverage and can be related to European systems. Moreover US medical system is being reformed to cover more population and the reform walks towards a Taiwanese system. National health systems have to remain profitable in an industry where the costs have a continuous growth pattern that may exceed the profitability. To have a successful medical system it is necessary to manage each department so it is profitable and successful.
This study aims to study a successful medical division: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. The main purpose of this study is to answer the following questions: • What are the drivers of success for a medical department? • What are the capabilities of a successful medical department? • What is the role or external factors in determining the extent of success? • What is the role of internal factors in determining the extent of success? This thesis attempts to answer those questions by identifying the Critical Success Factors or elements that must be given special and continual attention to bring about high performance and to guarantee the success of competition. The final goal of this thesis is to expand on the understanding of effective management of a medical division. Chapter 1 provides the motivational background for this thesis. It discusses the national health systems and the need of studying a successful division as a contribution factor for sustainable national health system. Chapter 2 starts from defining critical success factors and continues defining general frameworks that apply to strategic management to analyze the health care organizational context focusing on a specific set of strategic management dimensions: environmental and competitive analysis, organizational development analysis and organizational analysis. Chapter 3 presents the research methodology, a brief introduction to the organization analyzed, the focus of this study, the method of data collection and the main results. Chapter 4 analyzes the results and identifies essential critical success factors through the bibliographical and on-field research classified into the three different dimensions analyzed. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the findings and providing closing remarks about the critical success factors that can be adopted by health care organizations. | en |
