This Master thesis conducts the comparative study of Yasunari Kawabata The Old Capital and Pai Hsien-yung Crystal Boys, and focuses on transformation of Japan and Republic of China (Taiwan) after WWII. Both of the two novels, The Old Capital and Crystal Boys, stars a story in the major city in the country, becomes a discourse for a time of the country. Fathers and children in the novels have various faith to their country, making conflicts with other generation. In The Old Capital, different from her stubborn father who refuses western goods, Chieko Sada as heroine for the story presents a positive attitude toward the future of Japan with foreign culture. In Crystal Boys, a boy A-Qing is the main narrator to depict the story of the soldiers of a generation like his father, showing a wish to go back to mainland China, but contradict with the young generation who regard only Taipei as their home. For both stories, the quest for identity through movement in city, while during the process maturity of protagonists also obtained, and finally become metaphors for transformation of the country. |
