Strategic change is the behavior of an enterprise in response to the external environment changes. When the incumbent and internal resources do not possess the corresponding ability, through transfer of power to others, hoping improvement of the business performance can be brought through strategic change promoted by successor, however, up to one-third of the global enterprise are family firm that are believed to be conservative and poor operating efficiency. In Taiwan, family business account for 65% of all listed companies and 55% of the market value. The average age of the operators is 61 years old, as the aging trend, it is expected that power transfer events will occur more frequently in the next few years. After the transfer of power, how can new managers get along with senior non-family managers to facilitate their willingness to support the promotion of strategic changes, pursuing the previous performance? or climbing to another business peak. These issues have become a hot topic discussed among industry and academia in recent years. This study adopts the agency theories to examine the effect of non-family managers on a family firm’s strategies. This study uses Taiwanese listed family businesses which engaged in electronics-related industries, adopting six financial indicators to measure strategic change, and explore ways to moderate the negative impact of senior non-family managers on strategic changes. This research confirms that senior non-family member managers and ex-operator have a negative impact on the implementation of strategic changes made by new operator. |
