dc.description.abstract | 音程為兩個音高之間的距離,由音高基頻的比值所決定。 | zh_TW |
dc.description.abstract | A pitch interval is determined by the frequency ratio of two pitches. The present study investigated the effects of interval size and interval deviation on neural activity during discriminating pitch intervals. Twenty-nine participants (22.8±2.4 years old, 2 left-handed, 19 females) completed an fMRI experiment, in which they were asked to determine whether the heard intervals were larger than the visually-presented standard intervals. We used a factorial design with factor Deviation (a semitone versus a quartertone) and Size (a minor second versus a minor sixth). Behavior data and fMRI data were subjected to 2×2 ANOVA. Significantly better performance was observed for the larger interval deviation and smaller interval size. Analysis of fMRI data revealed two main effects. When the interval deviation was a quartertone, increased activity was found in the anterior insula, pre-supplementary motor area, basal ganglia, ventral premotor cortex, inferior frontal gyrus, and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex compared to the conditions in which the interval deviation was a semitone. In addition to those areas, the posterior parietal cortex, dorsal premotor cortex, and orbitofrontal cortex also exhibited increased activity when the interval size was a minor sixth compared to a minor second. This finding suggests that the right posterior parietal cortex implicated in magnitude processing and the left posterior parietal cortex implicated in semantic processing of magnitude are increasingly involved in discrimination of pitch interval with larger sizes. The present study provides novel evidence of the neural mechanisms underlying magnitude processing and categorical perception of musical pitches. | en |
