This study investigates the evolution of political motivations behind the Nationalist Government’s assistance towards Korean Provisional Government activities in Mainland China from 1921 to 1948. The Korean Provisional Government was first established in 1919 by a group of Korean independence activists based in Shanghai who sought to overthrow Japan’s colonial occupation of the Korean Peninsula. In 1921, the famed revolutionary Sun Yat-sen pledged his unconditional support for the Korean Provisional Government’s resistance against Japanese imperialism, and even after Sun’s death in 1925 followed by strongman Chiang Kai-shek’s rise to power in the nascent Nationalist Government, the Nationalist Party continued to support and fund the Korean Provisional Government until its final dissolution in 1948. These forms of aid mainly consisted of significant military, diplomatic, financial, and logistical contributions, all of which tremendously subsidized the Korean Provisional Government’s political operation in Mainland China. Existing scholarship often fails to sufficiently recognize and investigate the political motivations that drove the Nationalist Government to support the Korean Provisional Government from 1921 to 1948. Why did the Nationalist Government allocate an extraordinary amount of resources and efforts to aid a struggling government-in-exile, particularly at a time when its own political legitimacy in Mainland China was constantly under attack? This study therefore utilizes the comparative historical analysis method and consults previously neglected types of primary sources to reevaluate historical, political, domestic, and international factors that have influenced the political evolution of the bilateral alliance. The study first concludes that the bilateral alliance initially commenced as a politically symbolic yet practically insignificant gesture towards historical Sino-Korean ties and anti-Japanese resistance. However, a series of historical developments from 1930s onwards compelled the Nationalist Government to review its relationship with the Korean Provisional Government as an effective proxy to establish a pro-Nationalist administration in post- war Korea. This long-term political objective later became the dominant political motivation behind the Chiang Kai-shek administration’s decision to strengthen its support for Korean Provisional Government activities in Mainland China. |
