This study will focus on Soseki Natsume’s initial trilogy, which revolved around educated young men in Tokyo. The aim of this study is to unveil the diversified forms of the youth, the youth in different stages of life, and the problems they have been faced. In this study, the definition of the youth has been specified as college-trained young men aged over 17 and has been expected to become citizens who bring reform to the existing system after reviewing historical material along with other references. Chapter 1 portrayed various form of the youth in Tokyo by the year around 1908, by analyzing the interaction between Sanshiro and people he met in Tokyo. In Chapter 2 and Chapter 3, deep insights into the youth in different stages of life would be uncovered. After the Russo-Japanese War, Tokyo had become a city where modernization happened swiftly while jostling with tradition. It is in the city of Tokyo, the youth managed to overcome affliction and trial in life. Sanshiro’s urge to fit in the lifestyle of Tokyo, Daisuke’s collision with society’s limitation, and last but not least, Sosuke’s experience of connecting with the other then to spiritually split with significant other, the complex relationships that could only be observed in city helped the growth of the youth. Overall, it can be concluded that Soseki Natsume’s initial trilogy can be seen as a bildungsroman of the educated youth living in Tokyo in the late Meiji. |
