With the development of social media and digital technology, people benefit from the diversity and convenience of social media while also facing related mental health risks. This study takes the distinctive characteristics of emerging adulthood as its starting point and focuses on the issue of depressed mood in the context of social media use. Among the various factors associated with depressed mood, Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) warrants particular attention and is closely associated with depressed mood. Meanwhile, social support has generally been regarded as a protective factor against depressed mood. Within the context of social media, social support can further be differentiated into online and offline social support. However, research in Taiwan examining FoMO, social support, and depressed mood among college students in emerging adulthood remains limited. To address this research gap, this study adopts a digital wellbeing perspective to examine the associations of social media use, FoMO, and social support with depressed mood among college students in Taiwan. A web-based questionnaire survey was conducted among college students in Taiwan aged 18 to 25 who habitually use social media, yielding 646 valid responses. The findings indicate that: (1) time spent on social media is positively associated with depressed mood; (2) FoMO is positively associated with depressed mood; (3) both online and offline social support are negatively associated with depressed mood, with offline social support demonstrating a stronger protective effect than online social support; (4) FoMO partially mediates the relationship between time spent on social media and depressed mood; (5) female college students report higher levels of depressed mood than male college students; (6) older college students report higher levels of depressed mood; and (7) after controlling for gender and age, time spent on social media, FoMO, and online and offline social support collectively demonstrate significant explanatory power for depressed mood, with FoMO emerging as the most prominent risk factor. Based on these findings, this study proposes specific recommendations in the areas of personal digital wellbeing, school-based education and counseling support mechanisms, and future academic research, with the aim of promoting the mental health and overall wellbeing of individuals in emerging adulthood. |
