This study aims to explore the information needs and information sources of physical therapists in work-related contexts, and to analyze their preferences for different information sources as well as the interrelationships among these sources through the use of the Information Source Horizon map. The research design focuses on three core questions: (1) What kind of work roles do physical therapists have in work-related contexts, and what specific tasks are encompassed within these roles? Beyond these roles, what additional factors influence their information needs? (2) What types of information sources are included in the Information Source Horizon of physical therapists, and what preferences do they exhibit toward different sources within the horizon map? (3) What interconnections exist among the information sources within the horizon, and in what ways do these sources satisfy the information needs of physical therapists?
The study targeted full-time physical therapists in hospitals or clinics in Taipei and New Taipei City. Twenty-one participants were recruited through the researcher’s connections and referrals. The theoretical framework was based on Leckie et al.’s (1996) Model of the Information Seeking of Professionals and Freund’s (2015) Contextual Model of Source Selection. Sonnenwald’s (1999) Information Horizon was adopted as the theoretical foundation to explore physical therapists’ information sources, and Savolainen and Kari’s (2004) Information Source Horizon map was further used to analyze their preferences and the interrelationships among sources. Semi-structured in-depth interviews, together with the information source horizon map, were used for data collection, and thematic analysis was applied to interpret the data.
The findings reveal that physical therapists in their work-related contexts primarily assume five roles: service provider, student, educator, administrator/manager, and researcher. Among these roles, service provider is the most significant, and delivering physiotherapy interventions is their primary task. Furthermore, their information needs are influenced by career stage, workplace, tasks, and position/identity. Regarding information sources, the information source horizon of physical therapists encompasses eight categories: printed books and documents, human sources, search engines, databases, electronic books and documents, continuing education activities, video resources, and social media. Among these, human sources, printed materials, and search engines are the three most relied-upon sources. Further analysis indicates that their information sources are primarily of two types: focusing resources and balancing resources. Based on these results, a framework of physical therapists’ information horizon in work-related contexts is proposed. Drawing on the findings, suggestions for physical therapists, associations of physical therapists, and information service institutions are discussed.
