| zh_TW |
dc.description.abstract | In the past, status signals were mainly conveyed through wealth or socioeconomic advantages. However, with the ubiquitous use of social media and the recognition of pursuing various life goals, the sources of status signals are becoming more and more diverse. Furthermore, status signaling is often achieved through the traditional conspicuous consumption of luxury goods and leisure to display status. But as materialism gradually comes to be viewed negatively, people begin to focus on more novel status signals to build a positive social impression. This paper explores posts about exercise performance tracking (EPT) as a new form of status signaling based on the benign and malicious envy experienced by observers of such posts. The pilot study and the main study were conducted using questionnaire design and experimental method respectively. The pilot study established that exercising-related posts had been regarded as quasi-status signals, while the main study investigated posters’ exercising performance of the posters and observers’ exercising performance tracking preferences as factors that cause benign envy in EPT posts. The two key findings of this study contribute to the status signaling literature: (1) EPT posts elicit more benign envy than malicious envy, and (2) EPT posts most effectively signal status when the poster’s exercising competence is high and when the observer also has the habit of tracking their own exercise performance. | en |
